Q. You said you offer a
proofreading service, but isn’t this just a review of my work that you are
making a charge for?
A. No, not
at all. Proofreading takes place before the manuscript is published and is not
to be seen as a review. A proof reader helps the author to polish their writing
before publication.
Q. So isn’t proofreading just
like editing?
A. No,
proofreading traditionally, involves checking for typos, errors in grammar,
spelling and punctuation.
Editing goes
a lot deeper. It usually takes longer to edit a piece of written material than
it does to proofread. It’s important to understand that editing includes
proofreading.
In editing,
the work involves more than checking for mechanical errors. An editor checks
for syntax and readability and may also provide fact-checking. Words and
sentences will often be added, taken away, or rearranged where necessary. In
some cases, but not often, editing involves a full revision – an overhaul of
the original piece.
Whereas
proofreading is technical, editing involves more creativity and a closer
relationship with the original material. A good editor will work closely with the
author.
Q. How long do you take to
proofread or edit a piece of material?
A. This
really can vary dependant on the quality and length of the work. I do try to
have a week turnaround and keep the author updated by email every
step of the way. However, during busy periods the turnaround can be 2 - 3 weeks.
Q. Do you allow an author to make
an amendment then submit it to you to check without charging them extra?
A. Of course
I do. I only charge once for a piece of material and will work with the author
until they are completely happy with their manuscript.
Q. You offer discounts. Do the
manuscripts have to be submitted at the same time?
A. No. I do
hope that after working with me on your first manuscript, you will wish to work
with me again. I do like to have a close working relationship with the authors
I work with and I remember each of them. Even if they come back to me in twelve
months with new material, they will receive the discount.
Q. How do we pay you?
A. I accept
payment through Paypal. Once you agree to go ahead with one of the services, I
will commence edited. As soon as I have completed the edit, I will invoice you at
your required email address and as soon as the payment has cleared, I will send
you the revised version of your material. We can then discuss things further
and make any other alterations if necessary.
